쉽게 풀어 쓴 영어 문장 학습 4장(5형식 구동사)

해석 개념 5. 나는 허락한다 네가 게임을 하는 것을 

- 사실 이 문장 구조를 잘 파악하는 것만으로 영어의 20%가 끝난다고 해도 과언이 아니다.

하지만 많은 학생들이 이 문장 구조를 파악하지 못해 영어를 포기한다.

 

"나는 네가 게임을 하도록 허락한다"라는 문장을 영어로 바꿔보자.

I(나는) allow(허락한다) 다음에 나와야 하는 것은 '네가 게임을 하는 것'이다.

You(네가) play the game(게임을 한다) 이렇게 되고 "나"는 그것을 허락한다.

그래서 이 두 문장을 합치면 I allow you to play the game 이렇게 된다.

왜 이렇게 되는지 생각하기 보다 "그렇구나"라고 하고 외우면 더 간단하다.

왜냐하면 영어에서는 이러한 문장이 너무나 많이 사용되기 때문이다.

추가적으로 여기서 to play the game에 해당하는 부분을 '목적격 보어'라고 한다.

 

다른 4가지 문장구조들과 같이 이 문장구조를 결정하는 것도 '동사'인데

대표적인 동사들만 함께 외워보자.

 1. make, have, let은 play the game과 같이 목적격 보어 자리에 '동사원형(원형부정사)'가 온다.

 2. see, watch, hear, feel, smell, notice는 '동사원형' 혹은 '동사+ing(현재 분사)'가 온다.

 3. 이를 제외한 나머지 동사들은 모두 'to+동사원형'이 온다.

 4. make, keep, leave, find, think, consider은 흔히 '형용사'가 온다.

- 나머지 경우도 많지만, 이것만 기억해도 충분하다. 나머지는 여러 문장들을 통해서 익혀보자.

 

 

해석개념 6. 동사 + 전치사 + 명사

많은 학생들이 영어를 포기하는 두 번째 이유 중 하나가 바로 "동사 + 전치사"이다.

구동사, 전치사적 동사 등 다양한 범주가 많지만 여기서는 가장 핵심적인 느낌 정도만 갖고 가자.

사실, 이를 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 많은 숙어를 외워주는 것이 가장 빠르다.

 

동사 + (전치사 + 명사)

(동사 + 전치사) + 명사

(동사 + 전치사)

이들 중 어떤 형식으로 단어들이 묶이는지 파악하는 것이 우선이다.

I went to the party.

이 문장은 went + (to + the party) 이렇게 묶인다는 것을 알 수 있다.

I pulled out the assignments

이 문장은 (pulled + out) + the assignments 이렇게 묶인다.

I tried to pull back

이 문장은 단순히 동사와 전치사가 합쳐서 새로운 의미를 형성한 경우이다.

이러한 감각은 어느 정도의 숙어를 암기하면 금방 생긴다.

 

이제 I pulled out the assignments에 집중해보자.

이 문장은 I pulled the assignments out 이라고 다시 적을 수 있다.

두 문장의 차이는 out의 위치이다.

out이 동사 바로 뒤에 있느냐 문장 가장 뒤에 있느냐와 상관없이

두 문장은 의미가 유사하다는 것이 요지이다.

이러한 특징을 가지는 전치사에는 in out on off up down이 있다.

이들은 모두 어느 정도의 방향성을 가지고 있다는 특징이 있다.

 

 

1. Don't leave kids alone in front of the TV set with a remote control in their hands.

 

2. Many composers find the actual sound of the instrument itself interruptive to the composition process.

 

3. Many people in the nineteenth century considered head size a valid measure of intellectual merit.

 

4. The Safety Board will make cellphone use from talking handsfree to texting illegal in all states.

 

5. They expected the people being laid off to be beaten down and discouraged.

 

6. In short, they do not let their wants and needs be known because they are afraid of being turned away.

 

7. He would act out things and work with other students on projects using role play and drama.

9. When I saw them puzzled over some concept that I thought I had explained, I gave another example.

1. Don't leave(놔두지마라) kids(아이들이) alone(혼자가 되게) in front of the TV set(TV 앞에서) with a remote control(리모콘이 ~인 채로) in their hands(그들의 손에 있는).

 

2. Many composers(많은 작곡가들은) find(알았다) the actual sound of the instrument itself(악기 그자체의 실제 소리가) interruptive to the composition process(작곡 과정에 방해가 된다는 것을).
