해석 개념 6. V-ing 하는 것은 ~이다.

- 주어 자리에는 '자전거'라는 명사만 올 수 있는 것이 아니란 것은 모두가 알 것이다.

예를 들어 '자전거를 타는 것'처럼 동사 느낌을 가진 형태도 충분히 주어 자리에 올 수 있다.

이럴 때 사용하는 것이 바로 '동명사'이다.(riding a bike)

동명사는 '동사원형 + ing'의 형태를 가지며 '~하는 것'이라고 해석된다.

그리고 동명사는 원래 동사에서 태어났으므로 동사의 성격을 가지는데,

가장 대표적으로 '자전거를' 같이 목적어를 가지는 특성이 있다.

 

[Calculating the numbers of people](사람들의 숫자를 세는 것은) is not an easy job(쉬운 일이 아니다).

- 여기서 주어는 Calulating the numbers of people이며,

동명사 Calculating이 자신의 목적어인 the numbers of people과 한 뭉치인 것을 알 수 있다.

 

 

해석 개념 7. to-V 하는 것은 ~이다.

- 주어 자리에는 동명사만 올 수 있는 것이 아니다.

to 부정사라 불리는 'to + 동사원형' 형태도 올 수 있다.

여기서 to 부정사는 동명사와 같이 동사를 명사로 만들어 주는 것이므로 해석은 '~하는 것'으로 비슷하다.

다만 자주 사용되는 형태가 조금 다르다는 차이점이 있다.

'자전거를 타는 것은 내가 재일 좋아하는 일이다'를 영작해보자.

동명사를 사용하면 다음과 같이 될 수 있다.

Riding a bike is my favorite thing.

그리고 to 부정사를 사용하면 이렇게 바꿀 수 있다.

To ride a bike is my favorite thing.

그런데 to 부정사는 이렇게도 자주 쓰인다.

It is my favorite thing to ride a bike.

윗 문장과 차이점은 주어가 문장 제일 뒤로 가고 대신에 it(의미 없음)이 주어 자리를 차지한다는 것이다.

- 이 문장에서 주어는 대괄호 속에 있는 to secure the happiness of their people이며,

It은 그저 주어 자리를 차지하고 있을 뿐이다.
